A retrospective look at the Tanner Residence
- John T. O’ Connor
[Lift] off the ground, and paying homage to the Florida vernacular style:
- Elongated for full advantage of lakefront views.
- Engaged the climatic conditions of its site.
- Situated systematically in response to program requirements
The design of the Tanner Residence takes cues from the early pioneering homes of the region. Much like those “Cracker Houses” of the previous century, we’ve lifted off the ground to engage the prevailing breezes and encourage cross-ventilation.

This raised solution, however, also provided the owners with an economical structural design. Pillars of concrete block support a floor system comprised of standard wood joists with a plywood sheathing. These strictly spaced columns also became a framework into which glass or solid panels were inserted, based on programmatic requirements. The home is located on the shores of Lake Otis in Winter Haven, Florida.
