A retrospective look at the Lake House Residence
- Max Strang
[Shelter] is shaped within a shell-like form that acts as both structure and enclosure.
• Firmly grounded into its inland site.
• Secondary volumes that relate to specific programmatic requirements.
• Incorporates important passive environmental design concepts.
The Lake House is a confident expression of modern architecture that leaves behind any trace of vernacular influences. The home also departs from classical modernism and the tenets of the Sarasota School of Architecture through the act of minimizing overt structural expression. Although unlike many of Strang’s coastal designs in which the “shell” floats above the land and water, the Lake House is firmly grounded into its inland site through the use of a monumental plinth.

Nested within the white, stucco shell are secondary volumes that relate to specific programmatic requirements. A narrow courtyard amplifies the arrival experience and creates a privacy barrier for the private realm of the home. The home incorporates important passive environmental design concepts that result in abundant day-lighting and cross-ventilation potential. Glazing on the south elevation is extremely limited and a mature oak tree filters afternoon solar heat gain.
